Dual-Drive of Intelligentization and Green Transformation: China’s Gear Manufacturing Industry Enters a New Phase of High-End Development
Release time:
2021-11-12
Currently, China’s gear manufacturing industry is undergoing a transformative period centered on intelligent transformation, green development, and breakthroughs in high-end capabilities. Guided by national policies such as the 14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development and the Implementation Plan for Peaking Carbon Emissions in the Industrial Sector, the industry is gradually moving away from the traditional model of scale-driven expansion and transitioning toward a technology-intensive, green, and low-carbon industrial structure, thereby becoming a core pillar supporting the high-quality development of the high-end equipment manufacturing sector. According to industry reports, the global gear market is projected to exceed US$180 billion by 2025, with the Chinese market accounting for more than 35% of that total, maintaining its position as the world’s largest single market.
Currently, China’s gear manufacturing industry is undergoing a transformative period centered on intelligent transformation, green development, and breakthroughs in high-end capabilities. Guided by national policies such as the 14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development and the Implementation Plan for Peaking Carbon Emissions in the Industrial Sector, the industry is gradually moving away from the traditional model of scale-driven expansion and shifting toward a technology-intensive, green, low-carbon upgrade, thereby becoming a core pillar supporting the high-quality development of the high-end equipment manufacturing sector. According to industry reports, the global gear market is projected to exceed US$180 billion by 2025, with the Chinese market accounting for more than 35% of that total, maintaining its position as the world’s largest single market.
Intelligent transformation has become the core competitive advantage of the industry. An increasing number of companies are accelerating the deployment of digital twin and industrial Internet technologies to build end-to-end intelligent production systems. For example, Shuanghuan Transmission, a leading player in the sector, has developed the “oWorks Digital Intelligence Platform,” which assigns a unique QR code to each gear, enabling full lifecycle traceability from raw material processing to finished-product delivery and achieving a product pass rate of nearly 100%. Meanwhile, the localization of precision machining equipment is gaining momentum; as of 2024, the domestic self-sufficiency rate for key equipment such as precision gear-grinding machines and gear-measuring centers has risen to over 75%, providing robust hardware support for intelligent upgrades.
Green, low-carbon practices and high-end innovation have emerged as the dual engines driving industry development. Under the guidance of the “dual carbon” goals, green processes such as vacuum carburizing and controlled-atmosphere quenching are gradually replacing traditional, high-energy-consuming heat-treatment technologies, resulting in an average 18% reduction in the industry’s comprehensive energy consumption per unit of output. The widespread adoption of lightweight technologies, including powder metallurgy, has boosted gear-material utilization from below 70% to 95%, while reducing component weight by 10%–25%, thereby precisely meeting the lightweighting requirements of new-energy vehicles and industrial robots. On the demand side, the annual compound growth rate for gears used in new-energy-vehicle reducers has reached 12.4%, and the global market for wind-turbine gearboxes is projected to exceed RMB 400 billion over the next decade, further propelling the industry to deepen its integration into high-end equipment supply chains.
Collaboration across the industrial chain and accelerated international expansion have emerged as new trends. Leading domestic enterprises are driving the upgrading of small and medium-sized firms through technology transfer and integrated raw-material management, thereby fostering a collaborative ecosystem. Meanwhile, the standardization process in the sector is gaining momentum: China has taken the lead in revising three international gear standards, the share of high-end gear exports has risen to 34.2%, and the average export price has increased by 8.7% year on year. Industry experts note that, as the integration of government, industry, academia, research institutions, and end-users deepens, China’s gear manufacturing will continue to move up the global value chain toward the mid- to high-end segments, delivering more competitive solutions for the global high-end equipment industry.
